Fairfax journalists have walked off the job, following the announcement 120 editorial jobs will be axed from publications in Sydney and Melbourne.
Hundreds of journalists at the Sydney Morning Herald and The Age voted to strike until Monday morning, hours after receiving the news.
The company plans to slash costs through redundancies, tightening contributor budgets and reducing travel costs and expenses.
Journalists at the Newcastle Herald, Canberra Times and Brisbane Times have also voted to strike in solidarity.
