DRONES, DRUM LINES FAST TRACKED AS PART OF SHARK STRATEGY

Coffs Harbour has become the first to trial new shark-spotting drone technology in an effort to keep swimmers safe.

The NSW Government has fast tracked the roll-out of its $16-million shark strategy, in response to the state’s 14th attack earlier this month.

During a visit to the Mid North Coast today, Primary Industries Minister Niall Blair announced the advanced trial of drones at Coffs Harbour and smart drum lines at Ballina.

The installation of two 4G listening stations at Sharpes Beach at Ballina and Clarkes Beach at Byron Bay, which will provide real time data of tagged sharks, will also be fast tracked.

A further eight stations will be rolled out at Tweed Heads, Lennox Head, Evans Head, Yamba, Coffs Harbour, South West Rocks, Port Macquarie and Forster.

In addition, aerial helicopter surveillance between Bryon Bay and Evans Head will be increased to three hours a day, beginning next month.
