CLARENCE COUNCIL SEEKS 6.5% RATE RISE FOR NEXT 5 YEARS

Clarence Valley Council will seek a lower-than-expected rate rise over the next five years.

Councillors have voted five to four in favour of a 6.5 percent increase, despite a recommendation from General Manager Scott Greensill to lift rates by 8 percent.

If approved, the average resident will pay an extra $90 in the first year.

Mayor Richie Williamson says increases in water and sewage charges will be capped at 1.5 percent a year, over five years.

Clarence Valley Council was recently found by IPART to be unfit for the future.
