  1. There needs to be rules surrounding skateboards as there is, although this trend of longboards should be likened to that of cyclists. They reach much higher speeds and the board can do damage by itself.

I have been skateboarding busy city streets for 10+ years, on roads and footpaths, and this give way rule talked about above is lies. You don’t have to give way to pedestrians on a cross walk in the same sense as cars. You are also allows to ride across cross walks while on your board. This gentlemen was obviously going too quick, but the woman could’ve also stepped off the curb into the way of a truck that didn’t see her, and the result would’ve been much worse. Skateboards don’t have brakes, so don’t expect they can stop like a car. But you should always look before walking onto a cross walk. By the time he would’ve saw her, it would’ve been too late to stop. Instead the move is to avoid and pray.

  2. Skate boards should be ridden in skate parks – not on the footpath or road simply for this reason. They do not have brakes – they are not a roadworthy vehicle. They are designed for a recreational activity and therefore should not be on roads and footpaths. Use them in parks where there is less chance of a serious accident occurring
If people are on the crossing, skateboarders should get off and walk – then there is no danger to other people.

Also don’t forget that the elderly do not have the reflexes of a younger person, the lady may not have realized until it was too late if her hearing is also impaired in any way.

Skate boards belong in skate parks or other recreationally zoned grounds. NOT ON ROADS AND FOOTPATHS!!!
