Detectives attached to the Sex Crimes Squad have arrested a 54-year-old man in Caves Beach following a covert operation.
Officers assumed the identity of a 14-year-old boy and spoke with the man online, who allegedly made a number of sexually explicit comments, and sent pictures of child abuse material.
Police say arranagements were made to meet in Newcastle.
At 9am today, the man was arrested and taken to Charlestown Police Station.
A search is also being conducted of a Lake Macquarie home.
Investigations are continuing.
