Newcastle’s CBD is getting some festive cheer with extended shop opening hours, festive street lights and Christmas displays.

Newcastle City Council will launch Christmas in the city tonight by switching on Christmas lights on the old post office building.

There are more festivities and events planned as part of the festive initiative.

Lord Mayor Jeff McCloy says tonight’s plans will go ahead despite the weather.

“This Friday we have organised plenty of festive family fun including carols by Hamilton Public School Choir, musical performances from local bands, late night shopping, fantastic light displays, food and drink available and the all important visit from Santa.”

More than 60 shops on Darby Street, Hunter Street and the east end will be open for late trading tonight.
